My work is about silence, peace, harmony and quiet observation. I have lived in cities as diverse as The Hague and Rome. The latter is a city that is cacophonous but even in Rome I search for those quiet, reflective moments that centre the spirit and help me see the poetry in my subjects. Cartier-Bresson spoke of capturing the “decisive moment.” I look for what Italians call the suggestivo, which might or might not be in a moment. It is about evoking through an image feelings, sometimes undefined, that come from deep within ourselves but that transcend to the universal.

When I see Robert Stark’s photographs I feel the existence of the place intensely. Especially in his Black & White photos, I participate in the mood and atmosphere. Stark connects me with places that are a part of me even though I’ve likely never been there. His images touch a universal essence.

Robert Stark’s photographs capture a kind of elemental poetry of being. Every image is so lyrically composed and somehow in this crazy modern world, he pulls forth only the essential forms and rhythms. They feel fresh like flowers and yet completely ancient. I was honored that Harpswell made the cut, in the midst of such majestic landscapes—The Dolomites, the Amalfi Coast, Friesland, the Isle Skye ….

Robert Stark shows us the world we are too busy to feel; indeed those decisive moments that old masters of photography sought. In his lens, even stones come alive.
